Belgium is taking over the Council Presidency for the 13th time, but this time EU elections are on the table!
Unlike previous terms, elections are on the agenda and the EU is going through a period of political turbulence in this six-months presidency. In December, Belgium's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister unveiled their detailed programs, centred around the motto of “protect, strengthen, and prepare.”
Starting with this motto, they have identified six key priorities:
Upholding the rule of law and democracy
Enhancing economic competitiveness
Advancing the green transition
Strengthening the social agenda
Protecting borders and people
Promoting a global Europe
Projections indicate that the Council Presidency will reach the council conclusions in March and April before the election. These conclusions are anticipated to shape the EU's enlargement strategy and internal form process. Furthermore, Belgium's presidency aims to release an EU strategic agenda at the end of its term.
What lies ahead for #associations in 2024?
Critical discussions around the #EUGreenDeal are imperative to set a renewed agenda for 2024. Failure to do so might jeopardize the trajectory of the Green Deal. In light of the decisions taken at COP28, regulations and investments are on the way. At the climate conference in Dubai, 130 countries committed to tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 and doubling annual energy-efficiency gains to 4 percent.
The Belgian presidency shoulders the responsibility of finalizing decisions concerning the Green Deal files. Consequently, associations should closely focus on the newly established practices in 2024.
Moreover, the pre-election phase witnesses a decline in democratic tendency. However, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of the election because this election will profoundly impact the EU's trajectory over the next five years. Associations, once fostering awareness internally, can catalyse a chain effect by spreading it throughout their spheres.
