The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive: Empowering Associations for Sustainability

Updated: Sep 19, 2023

In the pursuit of #EUGreenDeal, the EU Commission put forward the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) in November 2022. The directive aims all packaging to be economically feasible, reusable and recyclable by 2030. This directive acts as a call of action and #associations' role in reaching the EU’s objective is crucial.

Many associations are committed to #sustainability. This directive aligns with their mission and enables them to advocate responsible packaging within their sectors. Beyond the directive’s direct impact, it showcases the power of policy in reshaping industries. Associations thrive on collaboration and can help by mirroring their values across industry lines, sparking innovation and EU’s agenda through collective efforts.

There are multiple actions associations can take to advocate for #PPWD:

  • Advocacy and Policy Influence: Associations can play a pivotal role in advocating for the implementation of the PPWD's goals and targets. They can collaborate with policymakers to influence legislation, regulations, and policies that support the directive's objectives.

  • Educational Initiatives: Associations can raise awareness among their members about the importance of the PPWD and its implications for the packaging industry. They can organise workshops, webinars, and seminars to educate their members on the latest recycling technologies, materials, and practices.

  • Collaborative Innovation: Associations can foster innovation by bringing together stakeholders from various sectors to develop sustainable packaging solutions. Collaborative projects can lead to the creation of new materials, designs, and technologies that align with the PPWD's requirements.

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive isn't just a policy: it's a symbol of progress. Associations can leverage this directive to catalyse transformation within their sectors, advocate for sustainable policies, and inspire industries to prioritise environmentally friendly practices. As associations embrace this directive, they pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient community.
